Good afternoon Evergreen families!
This week in Evergreen, the children have been learning about garden helpers. We have read stories about bees and butterflies, and discovered how they help the garden plants as they search for food. We talked about ladybugs, and how they protect plants by eating the aphids (who eat the plants). We explored the garden area and the yard outside, and found caterpillars, centipedes, beetles, and worms. The children used magnifying glasses outside to get a closer look at the creatures they found, and then released the bugs to go on their way.
This week the children have been exploring Loose Parts. They have been using sticks and colored rocks to make designs on a mat. They have used the sticks to frame their designs, or find ways to stand some of the sticks up to put rocks on top of them. They are exploring lines, and discovering how lines can connect their design or break it up. One of the activities has shapes of different sizes and colors. The children are exploring how different shapes can make a new shape (i.e.- two squares can make a rectangle). They are stacking shapes to explore contrasting colors, and putting shapes together to make a house or a bird.
The children have been watching the seeds and plants in the classroom very closely. There has been a lot of excitement about seeing the roots and shoots come out of the seeds, as well as seeing the shoots appear out of the soil. There has been a lot of discussion about seeing the plants change a little every day.
Next week we will be learning about worms. How do worms, help the plants and soil? We will also be planting the gardens next week.
Have an amazing Mother’s Day, and a wonderful weekend!
