Good afternoon Evergreen families!
This week in Evergreen, the children learned about water. We read Rivers of Sunlight, and learned the sun helps move water around the Earth in a cycle. The children learned some new vocabulary words: evaporate, water vapor, gas, liquid, and solid. Our nature walks this week, took us down by the creek. The children stood by the water’s edge, squatted near the water, and stood on the bridge over the water to see if they could notice any differences in the creek. Some children noticed they were able to see more of the creek when they were on the bridge. While we were near the creek, we found a pinecone in the water with snails on it. We listened to birds, found dried (brown) cattails and scattered the seeds, and saw new (green) cattails growing in the water.
The children have been keeping their eyes on our water/plant experiment this week. We put stalks of celery in cups of clean water, and cups of “dirty” (colored) water. What happens to the celery in the cups? The children have discovered that if plants are growing in polluted water, the plant is unable to stay clean and healthy. The children decided they want to eat plants that are clean and healthy, so they can be healthy too.
Math lessons this week, have introduced the children to a different kind of measurement. This week they ran laps against the clock, and measured whether or not they could run a lap around the playground in less than a minute. Most of the children were able to complete this in 30 seconds. This week they also measured how far they can jump. Standing with feet together, many children can jump 3-4 feet.
Next week we will be learning about soil, and why it is important. We will also continue to learn about things we can all do to help the Earth stay clean and healthy.
Have a great weekend!
